Alibaba’s Q1 FY2026 Earnings: A Snapshot of the Numbers
China’s Alibaba Group has reported a 75% drop in quarterly net profits for the first fiscal quarter of 2026, as the company continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. Net income for the period ended June 30, 2026, was RMB10.5 billion ($$1.6 billion), down sharply from 43.1 billion yuan ($6.4 billion), compared to RMB36.8 billion for the same period last year.
Alibaba’s top-line figures, however, showed a different story, with revenue jumping 9% year-over-year (YoY) to RMB269 billion ($40 billion), just meeting the estimates of analysts. The discrepancy between Alibaba’s profit and revenue growth is explained by a significant increase in capital expenditures on AI infrastructure.
Why Is Alibaba’s Profit Falling?
The drop in Alibaba’s profit is primarily attributed to increased capital expenditures. The company’s capital expenditures surged 75% YoY to RMB67.7 billion ($10 billion) for the quarter, compared to the analysts’ estimates of RMB29.2 billion. The company cited reasons for the jump include
uneven customer demand,
higher CPU-compute capacity,
and
increased prices for a wide range of chip components.
The surge in capital expenditures impacted Alibaba’s profit margins, with adjusted earnings per ADS (American Depositary Share) coming in at RMB8.52, compared to the analysts’ estimates of RMB11.26. Consequently, Alibaba’s free cash flow for the quarter turned negative at RMB44.7 billion.
Alibaba Cloud and AI Revenue Growth Is Accelerating
Despite the fall in profits, Alibaba’s AI business continues to boom. Revenue from Alibaba’s AI cloud and computing services jumped 45% YoY to RMB48.4 billion ($7.2 billion). Additionally, the company’s AI-related product revenue came in at RMB12.38 billion, recording triple-digit growth for the twelfth consecutive quarter, according to the company.
Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu stated that the company’s “full-stack AI strategy” is capitalizing on the demand for AI cloud services. He noted that Alibaba anticipates breakeven on AI-related capital expenditures within three years, given the current average gross margin.
Alibaba’s $56 Billion AI Investment Plan
Alibaba’s recent investment in AI infrastructure is part of a larger plan to dedicate RMB380 billion ($56.4 billion) to AI and cloud infrastructure between 2026 and 2029. According to Wu, the company has already allocated roughly 50% of the RMB380 billion investment budget for this year. The investment will enable Alibaba to meet the surging demand for cloud services and AI model development and hosting.
Alibaba’s capital-intensive approach is part of a global trend as firms invest heavily in data centers, cloud infrastructure, and semiconductor production to meet the rising demand for AI services.
How Did Alibaba’s Earnings Affect the Stock Price?
Alibaba’s shares dropped more than 3-5% in after-hours trading after the company’s earnings report. According to analysts at Citi, Alibaba’s recent disclosures on its AI investment and progress in its AI Labs and Applications division provide a more comprehensive view of the company’s capabilities and the competitive landscape. However, the 75% YoY jump in capital expenditures and negative free cash flow may raise concerns about the company’s funding needs and the timing of returns on investment.
Alibaba Restructures E-Commerce, Cloud, and AI Businesses
In addition to its earnings report, Alibaba announced a restructuring of its e-commerce, cloud-computing, and AI-model businesses into operating groups. The company also expects its second-generation T-Head chips to be taped out soon, which will reduce its reliance on external suppliers for chips.
The Bottom Line
Alibaba’s recent profits and revenue figures highlight the company’s commitment to investing in AI infrastructure at the expense of short-term profits. The company’s strategy is part of a broader trend among tech companies to prioritize long-term growth over immediate gains. For Alibaba, the strategy makes sense, given the company’s transformation from an e-commerce giant to a cloud and AI services provider. However, the company will need to balance its aggressive investment in AI infrastructure with profitability to sustain its growth in the years to come.
